Types of SASSA Disability Grant
SASSA provides both permanent and temporary disability grants depending on the type of disability.
1) Permanent Disability Grant
A permanent disability grant will be awarded to those who have been disabled for longer than a year. The permanent Disability Grant is not for a lifetime, but the applicant will awarded throughout disability longer than 12 months.
2) Temporary Disability Grant
Applicants for Temporary Disability Grants must be disabled for at least six months. The duration of a Temporary Disability Grant can range from 6 months to 12 months.
Eligibility Criteria for Disability Grant
Applicants for disability grants must meet the following requirements: Applicants must either be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.
- The age requirement is 18-59.
- Your residence must be in South Africa.
- The temporary disability grant is available if you have been unable to work for a minimum of six months.
- For a permanent disability grant, you must not have been able to work for 12 months.
- It is necessary to meet the SASSA means test with regard to Income and assets. A state-appointed doctor must assess your disability.
- A medical assessment must occur within three months of the application date.
- You must not be a part of other social grants.
- The income threshold for a single individual must be at most R96 8408,070, and for a married couple, the combined Income of the married person and their spouse should be at most R193 680 (R16,140) a year. If you are a single individual, the cost of an asset must not exceed R1 227 600, and if you are a married couple, the cost must not exceed R2 455 200.
Note: The applicant’s financial condition is determined by the SASSA mean test, which is based on Income and asset worth.
Amount of SASSA Disability Grant
As of the latest update, the SASSA Disability Grant is R2090 per person per month (April 2024), which can be raised to R2,180 per month (October 2024).
Procedure to Apply For Disability Grant
Applicants must undergo a medical assessment by SASSA’s appointed medical practitioner to verify their disability and determine which grant (permanent or temporary) they qualify for. You can apply online or at your nearest SASSA office once you have completed the medical assessment.
If the applicant is facing severe health issues and cannot visit the SASSA office, they can appoint a trusted family member or friend who can submit the application form on his behalf.
After applying, you or the appointed person will get a dated stamp receipt with the SASSA officer’s name and application reference number; keep the receipt as proof. SASSA will check all the details and release the grant if you are eligible based on your disability, Income, assets, etc.
Required Documents to Apply for Disability Grant
The documents required for applying for the SASSA disability grant typically include the following key points;
- Application Form: Complete the SASSA application form for the disability grant.
- Identity Document (ID): You will need to submit a certified copy of your South African Identity Document (ID). If you do not have an ID, you can submit your personal information by filling out an affidavit from the SASSA. If you have refugee status, you can submit your 13-digit refugee card.
- Proof of Residence: Submit proof of your residency.
- Marriage Certificate: Marriage certificates may be required if your spouse’s Income contributes to the household.
- Medical Assessment: Submit medical reports or certificates from healthcare professionals detailing your disability or medical condition.
- Banking Details: Submit your three months’ banking statements.
- Proof of Income & Assets: Submit your proof of Income and assets.
- Proof of Private Pension: Submit your proof of private pension (If applicable).
Processing Time for the Disability Grant Application
Your application will usually be processed in three months; after approval, you will get all the payments from the date you apply because they don’t have a fixed schedule.
Payment Process and Withdrawal Methods for Disability Grant
After the grant is approved, you can collect payment from the date you applied; you will be granted monthly. Depending on applicant preference, SASSA provides multiple methods;
- Cash Payment at Pay Points: You can collect your grant in cash at a designated pay point on a specific day. Benefit recipients can access these pay points at various locations.
- Electronic Deposit: The SASSA also offers the option of having your grant deposited directly into your account or Postbank’s. This electronic deposit ensures quick and secure access to your funds. However, please note that your bank may charge you for this service.
- Administrator Institution: In some cases, SASSA may designate an institution, such as a welfare organization, to act as the grant administrator. If you receive your grant through an administrator, they will facilitate the payment process for you.
Changing Disability Grant Payment Method
The Welfare office can easily change your current payment method; after validation, the SASSA disability grant payment will be credited to the new payment method. If you cannot receive the payment due to health issues, the person you mentioned in the application can collect it.

SASSA Disability Grant Reviews
SASSA can conduct a review to ensure that the applicant is still alive and eligible for the grant and that circumstances have yet to improve. To conduct a disability grant review three months before, the applicant will be notified when and where the review will be performed; if the applicant is not able to move or is bedridden, they will be visited at home.
Refugee applicants will have their applications reviewed when their refugee status expires. A compliance receipt will be provided to you at the end of your review.
What should the applicant do if the SASSA Disability grant application is rejected?
The SASSA disability grant can be appealed if your application is denied. Here are some steps you can take:
- Reconsider Your Application: You can request SASSA to reconsider your application.
- Right Of Appeal: The Ministry of Social Development’s National Department of Social Development can still hear your appeal if it is not accepted. The appeal should be submitted after the outcome of the application.
- Outcome Of Appeal: A review of your appeal will be conducted by the Ministry of Social Development at the National Department of Social Development, and if they find you fit for the grant, they will overcome the SASSA decision, and you will receive payment
Reasons for Suspension of Disability Grant
The suspension of grants by SASSA can occur for various reasons, including:
- Failure to Meet Eligibility Criteria: If a beneficiary no longer meets the eligibility criteria for the grant, such as changes in Income, employment status, or medical condition, SASSA may suspend the grant.
- Verification or Review Process: SASSA may suspend grants temporarily while conducting verification or review processes to ensure that beneficiaries still qualify for assistance and that payments are accurate.
- Investigation of Fraud or Irregularities: Grants may be suspended if there are suspicions of fraud, irregularities, or improper conduct related to the application or administration of the grant.
- Administrative Errors: Occasionally, grants may be suspended due to administrative errors, such as incorrect information provided by the beneficiary or technical issues with processing payments.
- Policy Changes: Changes in government policies or regulations may also lead to the suspension of specific grants as SASSA adjusts its procedures to comply with new requirements.
- Restoration of Grants: Restoration of Grants Application must be within 90 days of Grant Suspension
Reasons for SASSA Disability Grant Lapse
Grants lapsed due to the following reasons:
- If the period of the grant has lapsed,
- You no longer live in South Africa.
- Three consecutive months without collecting payment.
- Expired refugee status.
- If your Income and assets increase, then the eligibility measures through the mean test.
