SASSA War Veterans Grant Eligibility Criteria

Here are the SASSA eligibility requirements for the grant:

  1. Age Requirement: A 60-year-old or disabled individual Veteran.
  2. War Service: World War I, World War II, or Korean War service is required.
  3. Residency Status: Applicants must be South African citizen.
  4. Income Threshold: A single person’s monthly income should not exceed R8,070 a month or R96,840 a year. For a couple, your accumulated earnings cannot exceed R16,140 per month or 193,680 per year.
  5. Asset Threshold: If you are single, your assets should not exceed R1,372,800, and if you are married, they should not exceed R2,745,600.
  6. Marital Status: Both single and married veterans can apply, but the income and assets of both spouses are considered in the SASSA means test.

Amount of SASSA War Veterans Grant

As of April 1, 2024, SASSA grants are R2,200 per month for war veterans. Grants will be increased to R2,210 per person per month starting on October 1, 2024.

Procedure to Apply Online for the War Veterans Grant

  1. Visit the SASSA Website: Go to the official SASSA services website: https://services.sassa.gov.za/portal/r/sassa/sassa/home.
  2. Navigate to the Grants Section: On the homepage, find the “Apply For a Grant” section. This area contains detailed information about all the grants available, including the War Veterans Grant.
  3. Account Creation: Register if you don’t have a SASSA account.
  4. Login: Login to the account and start the process of application.
  5. Fill out the online application: Navigate to the application section to apply for War Veterans Grant. The information and documents you need to prepare are listed below:
    • ID card, Passport, or driving license.
    • Medical report in case of any disability.
    • Your war services certificate for verification.
    • Proof of marriage in case if married.
    • ID of your partner in case of married.
    • Death certificate In case your spouse is no more.
    • Last Quarter bank statement.
    • Your residency proof.
    • Proof of income and Asset Value.
  6. Upload Required Documents: The necessary documents will need to be scanned and uploaded. Make sure to scan copies clearly and legibly.
  7. Submit: Check your grant application and click on submit.
  8. Confirmation: You will receive a confirmation message from SASSA.
  9. Follow-Up: Your application will be reviewed by SASSA, and a means test will be performed to determine eligibility.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Processing Time

Usually, a SASSA War Veterans Grant application takes 90 days to process. You will receive the payment on the date you applied if your grant application is approved.

If the SASSA War Veterans Grant Application is denied, what should you do?

You may request a reconsideration of your grant application from SASSA, if you believe you are still eligible and an error caused the denial; if SASSA rejects your request, you may appeal to the Ministry of Social Development at the National Department of Social Development. You will receive your grant benefits if the Department of Social Development agrees with you.

Review of SASSA War Veterans Grant

It is important to keep the grant application up-to-date so that SASSA can check that the applicant is still alive and that your financial situation has improved or not. SASSA will notify you three months before the deadline for submitting your life certificate (proof of your survival). A written notification will also include details about the review date and location.

Suspension of SASSA War Veterans Grant: Reasons

Your grand will be suspended under the following circumstances;

  • If your income or asset crosses the threshold limits.
  • If you fill wrong details in the application form.
  • A grant application that was approved by mistake.

SASSA War Veterans Grant Lapse

Your grant will lapse because of the following reasons:

  • If the applicant is passed away.
  • You spend more than 3 months outside of South Africa
  • If you don’t collect your money for three months in a row.
  • Admission to the state institute that his contract with the state care.
