Eligibility Criteria for Care Dependency Grant

To be eligible for the SASSA Care Dependency Grant, the child, and their parents, primary caregiver, or foster parents must meet certain criteria.

  • Citizenship Status: Application must be made while living in South Africa. 
  • Medical Report: Children with disabilities must submit doctor reports confirming their condition.
  • Means test Qualification: Applicants must pass SASSA means test criteria to verify financial need, ensuring the grant aids those who require financial assistance caring for their dependent children.
  • State-Funded Institution: Applicants must not be in a government-funded facility, such as a psychiatric hospital or special care center, receiving 24-hour care for over six months.

SASSA Means Test for Caregiver or Foster parent

To qualify for the SASSA care dependency, the income of the caregiver or foster parent must fall within the threshold defined by SASSA.

  • SASSA conducts no asset threshold test; instead, the assessment is based only on the income of the foster parent.
  • The annual income threshold for single individuals is R249 600 or R20 800 per month.
  • Married individuals must meet a yearly income threshold of R499 200 or R41 600 monthly.

Amount of SASSA Care Dependency Grant

As of the latest update, the SASSA Disability Grant is R2180 per child per month. From 1 October 2024 it is expected that grant amount will increase to R2,190 per child per month.

Care Dependency Grant Online Application Procedure

Here is the step-by-step process to apply online for the SASSA care dependency grant;

  1. Go To SASSA Service Website: You can apply for any SASSA grant by visiting the official SASSA services website at: https://services.sassa.gov.za/portal/r/sassa/sassa/home
  2. Grants Section: Click the “Apply For a Grant” section.
  3. Login: Once you have entered your credentials and logged into your SASSA account, fill out the grant application form.
  4. Online application: Visit the application section and fill out the necessary information.
    • ID card
    • Proof of marriage (If you are married)
    • Medical assessment report of the child
    • Birth certificate of the child
    • School certificate of the child
    • Your residency proof
  5. Upload Documents: Documents that are required for upload must be scanned. Check all the necessary documents and information and click on submit button.
  6. Follow-Up SASSA: Follow up with SASSA and track your application status via SASSA status check.

Care Dependency Grant Application Processing Time

You will receive the grant payment in your account from the date you applied for the SASSA care dependency grant if your application is accepted. The grant payment is usually processed within 90 days of applying.

Review of Care Dependency Grant

To check the financial and medical condition of the applicant, SASSA conducts a review to ensure that the applicant is still eligible and alive. The SASSA will inform you about the date, time, and location approximately 90 days prior to the review. The grant beneficiary is responsible for cooperating with the SASSA review team. After the review, SASSA will update you on the outcome.

Payment Methods For Care Dependency Grant

Applicants can receive the grant payment via the following methods;

  • Cash payments at designated pay points.
  • Bank, including post bank.
  • Institutions recommended by SASSA.

Note: If you cannot collect the grant payments, you can nominate a trusted person to collect them on your behalf.

SASSA Care Dependency Grant Lapse

The grant will lapse if the dependent child has passed away. If the dependent child is admitted to government-funded institutions. If the child moves abroad or die.

Reasons for Suspension of the Grant

  1. Change in circumstances, which includes financial or medical.
  2. Because of the SASSA review result.
  3. Input of false information in the grant application.
