SASSA grant-in-aid is a further social security grant that SASSA offers to citizens of South Africa who already receive either old age grants, disability grants, or war veteran grants.
SASSA provides financial assistance to people who are unable to take care of themselves and are facing challenges due to old age or any mental or physical condition. SASSA pays an additional amount so that they can hire a full-time caretaker.

The SASSA grant-in-aid amount changes every year. As per the latest update from the SASSA official site, the aid amount is R530 per month.

Eligibility Criteria for SASSA Grant-In-Aid

Here are the eligibility criteria to receive an additional grant-in-aid support :

  • Grant recipient: The applicant must have already received an SASSA old age grant, war veteran grant, or disability grant.
  • Care Needed Time: The person must be physically or mentally dependent on another person for full-time care.
  • Medical Report: A medical assessment from a certified medical professional must confirm this need for care.
  • Residency: The applicant must be a South African citizen or a refugee living in South Africa to qualify.

Documents Required for SASSA Grant-In-Aid

A grant-in-aid applicant must submit original or certified copies of the following documents:

  • South Africa National ID (13 digits).
  • You will need to complete and sign an affidavit for a grant-in-aid.
  • An updated medical or assessment report will be required to confirm your health condition.
  • A document proving that you are married (if you are).
  • Death certificates are necessary if your spouse dies.

SASSA Grant-in-Aid Application Process

Applicants can apply online via SASSA’s official website or at any SASSA office nearby. Ensure that all your relevant information, along with the required documents, are present when you submit your application. Applicants can apply for SASSA grant-in-aid when applying for other SASSA grants (old age grants, disability grants, or war veterans grants).

In case of any disability or health issues, or if you are unable to visit the SASSA office, your family member or your friends with a power of attorney can legally apply and proceed with your application on your behalf.

Review and Approval

SASSA will review and verify your application after it has been submitted. If the application is approved, the applicant will receive a notification, and the grant will be paid monthly along with their existing SASSA social grant.

Visit the SASSA status check, enter your South African ID and mobile number, and click on the “Check Status” option. This process helps applicants understand whether their application has been received, processed, or approved or if any additional information for the application is needed.

Rejection of SASSA Grant-in-Aid Application

You can reapply for the grant if it is rejected due to an error, or you can request SASSA to reconsider your application if it is still denied; if you meet the eligibility requirements, you can appeal for the grant application within three months after rejection.

Grant-In-Aid Lapse Reasons

  • The grant will automatically lapse upon the death of the beneficiary.
  • If the beneficiary’s medical condition improves to the point where they no longer require full-time care from another person, the grant-in-aid may be discontinued.
  • If the beneficiary is admitted to a state-funded institution, such as a hospital, care facility, or prison, the grant-in-aid may be discontinued since the state assumes responsibility for their care.
  • SASSA periodically reviews the eligibility of grant recipients; if a beneficiary fails to participate in these reviews and does not provide the necessary documentation, the grant may lapse.

SASSA Grant-In-Aid Suspension

  • In the following circumstances, your grant can be suspended;
  • Your condition improves financially or medically.
  • Input of wrong details in the grant application to receive the grant.
  • Unable to cooperate with SASSA officials at the time of review.

Note: You can apply for restoration within 90 days if your grant is suspended for any reason.
