SASSA Old Age Grants: Eligibility Criteria
The following criteria must be met in order to qualify for the SASSA old age grant:
- Required Age: You must be 60 or older to apply.
- Residence: South African citizenship, permanent residency, or refugee status is required for applicants.
- Other Grants: Applicants should not be receiving another social grant, excluding the SASSA grant-in-aid.
- SASSA Means Test: As of 2024, the income threshold is set at R86,280 per year for a single person and R172,560 for a married couple. The asset threshold is R1,227,600 for a single person and R2,455,200 for a married couple.
Amount of SASSA Old Age Grant
Those under 75 years of age (over 60) can expect to receive approximately R2,180 per month, while those 75 and older may receive approximately R2,200. From October 2024, the grant amount may increase by R10 per person.

Click on the “Apply for a Grant option” and enter your login details; if you don’t have an account, you will need to create one for the application process. Please fill out and complete the SASSA old age grant application form, attach the document, and submit it.

- If you are married, submit a marriage certificate.
- Submit a death certificate if your partner is deceased.
- Documents such as utility bills and other documents to prove your existing address.

Suspension Reasons for SASSA Old Age Grant

- The grant is immediately suspended upon the death of the beneficiary.
Lapse of Old Age Grant: Reasons for it
- Failure to complete life certification processes may result in the grant being assumed inactive and thus lapsing.
- Receipt of another social grant without appropriate notification can cause the old age grant to lapse.
- Failure to comply with administrative requirements, such as submitting necessary documentation or attending required interviews, can lead to the grant lapsing.
- If the grant is not collected for three consecutive months, SASSA may assume the beneficiary no longer needs the support, leading to the lapse of the grant.
